    Dominicans surpass Puerto Ricans as

    city’s largest Latino group

About 747,473 Dominicans lived in the five boroughs in 2013, compared with 719,444 Puerto Ricans, according to Census data.

Dominicans have shot past Puerto Ricans as the largest Latino group in the city, a new study found.

There were about 747,473 Dominicans in the five boroughs in 2013, compared with 719,444 Puerto Ricans, according to a Census data analysis by CUNY’s Center for Latin American, Caribbean & Latino Studies.

There has been a surge in immigration to New York from the Dominican Republic — with 55,436 immigrants between 2010 and 2013 — and Dominican women living here have high birthrates.

Meanwhile, the Puerto Rican population, historically the city’s largest Latino group, has been falling since the 1990s.

Mexicans To Be Majority of Latino New Yorkers By 2024, Study Predicts

By Diego Graglia, FI2W web editor

Despite the U.S. Latino population’s diversity and widespread presence, certain Hispanic groups have traditionally been associated with specific U.S cities – Mexicans in L.A. and Chicago, Cubans in Miami, Puerto Ricans in New York.
But New York’s Hispanic face is rapidly changing. By 2024, a new study says, New York’s largest Hispanic group will be Mexicans, with Dominicans in second place. The predicted shift is due to both the migration of Puerto Ricans to other states and other parts of the metro area, and the ongoing influx of people from other parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, “The Latino Population of New York City, 2007″ was authored by Laura Limonic, research associate at the Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center. [You can download it in pdf by clicking here.]
The city’s Latino population increased by 2.5 percent between 2006 and 2007, to over 2,337,000, the report said.
While several groups have become larger, the rates of growth for Mexicans and Ecuadorians are particularly striking: since 2000, the number of Mexicans increased by 57.7 percent — to over 289,000 — and Ecuadorians, by 38 percent, to over 201,000.
“At this pace and according to projections, in 2025 Mexicans will be the biggest Hispanic group in the city,” said the Center’s directorLaird Bergad in presenting the study, according to Hoy newspaper.
“Although the data cannot be exact,” Bergad added, “they do represent the trends felt day to day on the city’s streets.”
The study showed two interesting bits of information: for the first year since the 1980s the city’s Puerto Rican population in 2007 grew instead of declining, and also for the first year in over two decades, the number of Dominicans decreased.
Puerto Ricans, who are account for one of every three Latinos in the city, increased by 0.9 percent between 2006 and 2007. But the overall trend is downwards: since 2000 the city’s Puerto Rican population had dropped by 2.6 percent.
Dominicans, who have been arriving in strong numbers since the mid-’60s, went down by 1.3 percent between 2006 and 2007, but they showed an increase of 13 percent since 2000.
The report said “the sharp rise” in the Mexican-origin population between 2006 and 2007 (9.8 percent) was due to “continued migration to New York City.” Some 26,000 people were added to the local Mexican population and 44 percent of them were foreign-born.

Limonic explained the future evolution of the city’s Latino population this way,
If population growth continues at the yearly rates found between 2000 and 2007 Dominicans will surpass Puerto Ricans and become the largest sector of the City’s Latino population in 2020.
Mexicans will surpass Puerto Ricans to become the second largest Latino national group behind Dominicans in 2022, two years later; and in only another 2 years, by 2024, Mexicans will surpass Dominicans to become New York City’s most numerous Latino nationality, in less than two decades.
While census figures are the most reliable population count available, Latino community advocates usually point out that they are not always accurate when accounting for Latino immigrants because of the presence of undocumented newcomers among them.

This system allows to make transparent the car to improve the angle of vision of drivers. The idea is essentially based on reflecting mirrors mounted on the doors and seats were coupled equipped with a video projector installed at the rear of the vehicle and external cameras.

The prototype will therefore allow the driver to have the impression that the car is fully transparent and thus the barriers will be very visible.

A very original innovation that could certainly reduce accidents due to lack of vision and blind spots.

    SIGNS OF TERRORISM

    Signs of Terrorism

Pre-mastersstudent at Leiden University Campus The Hague

In these new and challenging times, we as citizens have a duty to help protect our communities. We can help provide safety and security in Indiana by remaining vigilant and reporting unusual behavior or events immediately.

Listed below are eight signs of terrorism that may help detect potential terrorist acts.

    1. Surveillance

Terrorists will likely observe a chosen target during the planning phase of an operation. They do this to determine the strengths, weaknesses and number of emergency personnel that may respond to an incident. Suspicious actions during this phase may include someone recording or monitoring activities, drawing diagrams or making notes on maps, using vision-enhancing devices, or having possession of floor plans or blue prints of places such as high-tech firms, financial institutions, or government facilities, including military installations. Routes to and from the target are also usually established during the surveillance phase.

    2. Inquiries

A second sign, inquiries, entails attempting to gain information about a place, person, or operation pertaining to the target. Terrorists may attempt to elicit information about a critical infrastructure such as a power plant, water reservoir, maritime port, military base, bridge or tunnel by making unusual inquiries. They may inquire about usage and operations. Additionally, they may attempt to place people in legitimate employment at key locations to monitor day-to-day activities and gather detailed knowledge in order to make their mission or scheme more effective.

    3. Tests of Security

Terrorists may also test a target’s security to gather data. To do this, they may drive by the target, moving into sensitive areas and observing security or law enforcement response. They are likely assessing how long before personnel respond to a security breech or the routes responders take to a specific location. Terrorists may also attempt to penetrate physical security barriers or procedures in order to assess strengths and weaknesses.

    4. Fundraising

Although this is a tough sign to pick up on, it is one of the most important. Without funding, terrorist activity will come to a dramatic halt. Terrorists are very creative in raising, transferring, and spending money they come in contact with. Some scenarios to look for include: (1) credit card fraud, (2) defrauding the elderly, (3) people asking for donations to legitimate organizations but in peculiar ways, and (4) very large amounts of cash used in business transactions.

    5. Acquiring Supplies

Terrorists may purchase or steal explosives, weapons, ammunition, or attempt to store harmful chemical equipment. In order to gain easier entrance to a secured area, they may also try to acquire uniforms, equipment or identification of first responders, including military personnel. Other items they may try to obtain include flight passes, flight manuals, passports or other pieces of identification. If they are unable to steal these types of things, they may attempt to create counterfeit copies.

    6. Suspicious/Out-Of-Place Behavior

Profiling individuals is wrong, however, profiling behaviors may indicate suspicious behavior. Sometimes suspicious people just “don’t belong” or a behavior seems out of place.

    7. Dry Runs

Before executing the final operation or plan, terrorists may engage in a practice session, or “dry run,” to work out flaws or unanticipated problems. Although they normal conduct multiple practice sessions at or near the target area, a “dry run” may be the heart of the planning stage of a terrorist act. During a “dry run,” terrorists may monitor police radio frequencies and record emergency response times.

    8. Deploying Assets/Getting Into Position

The deploying assets or getting into position stage is an individual’s last chance to alert authorities before the terrorist act occurs.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and The Moreland Mess

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and The Moreland Mess

"Mess" doesn't do this one justice.

Andrew Cuomo launched a Moreland Commission on Public Corruption, ostensibly to investigate the culture of corruption that has made New York politics the laughing stock of the Nation.

But Andrew Cuomo tightly controlled the Commission from behind the scenes, and
quashed subpoenas of his own campaign donors when the investigation got to close to him.

Suddenly, Cuomo shut down the Commission before they could complete their work.

    The story made
national headlines this Summer: only in New York could a Governor corrupt his own corruption commission.

The New York Times called it a
gift to cynics, and the Daily News and New York Post cheered US Attorney Preet Bharara's announcement that his office would pick up the investigations where the Moreland Commission left off.

    Nobody was persuaded by the
excuse that Andrew Cuomo offered to the Crain's editorial board:

"It's my commission. My subpoena power, my Moreland Commission. I can appoint it, I can disband it. I appoint you, I can un-appoint you tomorrow.

"So, interference? It's my commission. I can't 'interfere' with it, because it is mine. It is controlled by me."

The Times called that one "Andrew Cuomo's tantrum." Sounds right to us.

Mr. Bharara confirmed recently that his office is still running multiple investigations in Albany.  That leaves Andrew Cuomo as the only candidate for Governor who has retained a criminal defense team, and there's a very real possibility that Cuomo could be indicted by federal prosecutors if he's reelected.

The more the press digs, the worse things get.  Just last week, the New York Times reported that Cuomo maintained tight control over a post-Hurricane Sandy Moreland Commission.  According to the Times, their investigation "reveals some of the
same hallmarks: interference, efforts to shield his administration's role and a sense that the governor had a clear idea at the outset of what the commission should conclude."

Yes, even a commission to investigate the government's response to a devastating hurricane wasn't free from Andrew Cuomo's political manipulation.

This has been the hallmark of the last four years: on issue after issue, Andrew Cuomo articulates the problem, promises change, then merely scratches at the surface while declaring victory in a series of press releases.

    The Status Cuomo reigns.

After four years, Andrew Cuomo's New York is still the most taxed, most regulated, least free, least business-friendly state in America, just as it was when Andrew Cuomo took office.  It's time for new leadership.

Rob Astorino, Chris Moss, Bob Antonacci and John Cahill comprise one of the best teams of candidates we've had in years.

Election Day is tomorrow, and there's only one thing left to do: get out and vote.  Check our
Election Center if you need to find your polling place.

    "La Cachetada de Willie Colón"

    SALUDOS

NO HUBO IMPACTO.
