Sheldon Silver, Ex-New York Assembly Speaker, Is Disbarred
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESSMARCH 29, 2016
Sheldon Silver, the former New York State Assembly speaker, has lost his license to practice law after his conviction for fraud and extortion.
Mr. Silver, 72, was disbarred on Tuesday by the Appellate Division of State Supreme Court in Manhattan. He was convicted on Nov. 30 in a $5 million corruption case. Prosecutors said he traded favors to enrich himself. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 13.
Mr. Silver’s lawyers argued that the disbarment should be delayed until a federal judge decides on their motion for a new trial.
But the appeals court denied the request and said that Mr. Silver’s name should be “stricken from the roll of attorneys” in New York. A Democrat, Mr. Silver served as leader of the State Assembly from 1994 through early 2015.
