Martinique is an Overseas Department of France. In 1946, the French National Assembly voted unanimously to transform the colony into an Overseas Department of France. It has a population of 376,480 as of 2016 and a surface area of 436 square miles.

It is also an outermost region of the European Union. The inhabitants of Martinique are French citizens with full political and legal rights. Martinique sends four deputies to the French National Assembly and two senators to the French Senate.

Martinique is a region of France and is therefore integral part of the French Republic. As part of France, Martinique is part of the European Union, and its currency is the Euro. Like Puerto Rico, Martinique has two languages; the official language is French, and virtually the entire population speaks Antillean Creole (Créole Martiniquais).

In 2014, Martinique had a total GDP of 8.4 billion euro. Its economy is heavily dependent on tourism, limited agricultural production, and grant aid from mainland France.

Martinique employees earn an average of $41,499, ranging from $26,388 at the 25th percentile to $51,237 at the 75th percentile, with top earners (the top 10%) earning more than $69,067.
